Animals need to adapt to their environment adaptation to survive. In science class, we learned the different ways alleles travel through different generations. There were three alleles:
'G' (green)- the dominant allele.
'r' (red)-recessive to green and incompletely dominant to yellow.
'y' (yellow)-recessive to green and incompletely dominant to red.
We used experimental probability and picked toothpicks; which represented alleles at random. The 'pond' which our fish live in has lush green algae. This allows green, red and orange fish to hide with camouflage, but the yellow fish must be sent to the 'morgue'. In our first generation of fish, we had 6/12 green, 5/12 orange fish and 1/12 red fish. This proved that green was the dominant allele. In our generation two, we ended up with the same thing. In generation three, we had 5/12 green fish, 3/12 red fish and 1/12 orange fish and 3/12 yellow fish. Because the yellow fish were not well adapted to their environment, they were eaten by predators and sent to the morgue. There were only two yellow alleles left. The survival of fish that lived to pass on the more useful alleles showed the survival of the fittest.
In the generation four, there occurred a Natural Disaster. Factory waste came into the lake, killing the seaweed and algae. This allowed the yellow fish to camouflage better, because the rocks were exposed. This also made the green fish more vulnerable and sent them to the morgue. In our generation four we had 4/9 red fish, 1/9 yellow fish and 4/12 green fish that were sent to the morgue. This changed the fish population dramatically and wiped out the dominant allele. If the lab had been changed so the the factory waste made the red fish vulnerable the dominant allele might have completely taken over.
